How to Keep Knots Out of Hair Extensions

Keep your extensions looking good and knot-free.
Hair extensions are a good way to change your look between an edgy short cut and sexy long hair. You can buy synthetic extensions or natural human hair extensions. Synthetics are made of thin strings of plastic that resemble hair and come either pre-straightened or pre-curled. Their advantage is price, as they tend to be less expensive than natural extensions. But their downside is that you can't restyle them. Natural hair extensions can be restyled with all your normal hair products and heat stylers. They're also smoother and less irritating than synthetic. However, because of the sterilization, coloring and styling process needed to bring them to store shelves, they aren't as healthy as natural hair and tend to get tangled easily. This is also a problem with synthetic. Fortunately, you can keep them knot-free with simple changes.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • De-tangler
  • Boar-bristle brush
  • Covered case for storage
    • 1
Mist the extensions with a de-tangler spray as soon as you put them in, and throughout the day. Do not soak them with the product.
    • 2
Brush through the extensions with the boar-bristle brush, starting at the ends and working your way up. Do this immediately after misting with a de-tangler. Boar-bristle brushes have a thick concentration of bristles so they smooth out a lot of hair at a time, without missing knots. Hold the hair above any knots you find while you brush them through, so you don't end up ripping out the extension.
    • 3
Store your extensions in a box big enough to hold the hair without folding it on itself, and so that it lies flat. Make sure the box has a cover so the extensions do not collect dust that can stick to the hair and cause knots.
    • 4
Wash your extensions once a week to get rid of product buildup. The package you buy them in will have specific instructions on how yours need to be washed. Follow directions closely or they may get damaged in the process.
