How to Clean PVC Jackets

How to Clean PVC Jackets

Polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC or vinyl, is a water-resistant plastic material often used to make raincoats and other types of protective outerwear. A PVC jacket can keep you dry in all types of weather, but it requires special care and cleaning methods to maintain its waterproof qualities. Harsh detergents and hot water can ruin the rubber-like PVC and leave the jacket dull and dried out. Gently wash and dry your PVC jacket after each use to keep the material clean and supple.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Mild laundry detergent (optional)
  • Towel
    • 1
Place the PVC jacket in the washing machine. Wash the PVC jacket on a warm, gentle cycle. If the jacket is very dirty, add mild laundry detergent according to the package directions.
    • 2
Run the PVC jacket through the rinse cycle twice if you used laundry detergent.
    • 3
Remove the PVC jacket from the washer and hang it in a clean place to dry.
    • 4
Run a towel over the PVC jacket to absorb any excess water and reduce drying time.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't wash your PVC jacket after each use, dry it thoroughly with a towel after coming indoors.
  • Do not use more laundry detergent than the amount specified on the package.
  • Do not use bleach, fabric softeners or dryer sheets on PVC jackets.
  • Do not wash PVC jackets in hot water.
