- Suffering from an uneven skin tone can be embarrassing, but it doesn't have to ruin your life. There are numerous treatments available for smoothing the appearance of uneven skin, improving texture and creating a blended color. These treatments vary in how involved they are, but they do work.
Exfoliating Scrubs
- Using an exfoliating scrub helps to remove the topmost layers of skin to reveal healthier, fresher skin underneath. The goal is to help dead skin cells slough off faster to encourage new skin to grow. This results in the fading of red marks or dark spots over time.
Sunscreen
- Sun damage is one of the primary reasons people end up with uneven skin tones. This doesn't have to be the case, however. Wearing sunscreen every day---whether it's sunny or not---helps keep the skin nourished and prevents damage to the pigments.
Chemical Peels
- Chemical peels can reduce an uneven skin tone. By applying alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to the skin, you essentially remove the top layers of skin, which are often damaged and carry a lot of the uneven pigment. The faster these top layers are removed, the better your skin will look.
Laser Resurfacing
- Laser resurfacing is another option, especially in the case of larger, more serious skin tone discrepancies. Laser treatments can remove birth marks, freckles, acne scars and age spots. Plus, when the top layers of skin are removed, it stimulates new tissue growth as well as collagen production, meaning your skin will look firmer and smoother.
Microdermabrasion
- Microdermabrasion can help remove the top layers of skin by sanding them off. This process is gentle, however, and usually does not hurt. It does leave the skin slightly red, temporarily. The end result is smoother, more even-looking skin that is healthy and glows.
