This dress could be turned into a fashionable summer top.
Sometimes a dress just hangs unworn in your closet. Perhaps you rarely wear dresses, or maybe the dress has a skirt that doesn't fit or flatter your figure. Convert such a dress into a top and you will get much more wear out of it. A dress that is too fancy for everyday wear can become a top that is just right to pair with jeans for an evening out.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Yardstick
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Needle
  • Thread
    • 1
Try on the dress and determine where you want the hem to be. Mark this point with a pin. If the dress has a zipper, the hem must be at least an inch below the end of the zipper.
    • 2
Lay the dress out on a flat surface. Measure up from the original hem to the pin with the yardstick perpendicular to the hem. Subtract 1 1/2 inches from this measurement.
    • 3
Measure this distance up from the original hem every 3 inches around the hem. Mark these points with pins. Be sure to keep the yardstick perpendicular to the hem.
    • 4
Cut the skirt of the dress off by cutting along the line of pins.
    • 5
Iron up 1/2 inch along the new edge of your top. Iron up another inch to create the hem.
    • 6
Hem the top by hand. Starting at a seam, take a 1/4 inch stitch through the top fold of the hem, then make a tiny stitch in the fabric of the garment directly behind the the stitch in the hem. Only pick up two threads of the fabric when you make this stitch.
    • 7
Make your second stitch 1/4 inch further along the hem. Continue stitching this way all all the way around the hem. Knot the thread close to the fabric and cut off the excess.
