E. coli reaches US
EUROPE'S killer E. coli outbreak continues its march across the globe with more than 1800 people in a dozen countries affected.
However, it is unlikely that cases of infection will occur in Australia in significant numbers, according to Professor James Paton, the director of the Research Centre for Infectious Diseases at the University of Adelaide.
The outbreak, which began in northern Germany and has claimed 17 lives, has travelled to Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland as well as the US and Canada.
